Planting instructions

Have you received a blueberry plant? Then follow the steps below:

1 Put the plant in a bucket of water

Make sure the roots can fill up with water.

2 Make a planting hole for the blueberry plant

Dig a large planting hole (+/- 20 cm deep) and loosen the bottom of the planting hole well to allow excess water to drain away, which will ensure good root growth. Preferably choose a sunny spot.

3 Fill the planting hole with peat.

Peat is a slightly acidic soil needed for the blueberry plant to grow well.

4 Place the plant in the planting hole

Plant the blueberry plant such that the roots are just in the ground.

5 Fill the hole with soil and remaining peat

For light soil, use a little extra potting soil. Push the soil lightly, not too hard, as this will prevent oxygen from reaching it. Preferably plant the plant a little higher than the ground.

6 Provide water

Water the plant sufficiently, especially if you plant the blueberry plant in spring or summer. Bushes planted in a pot should be watered very regularly to prevent them from drying out (pot size: 80 cm diameter). Do not water too much. Moist is good enough. Better to water a little twice than once a lot. The roots grow superficially.

7 Caring

From the 2nd year of growth, start light pruning. From 4 years onwards, remove 30% of the plant volume every year on average. Blueberry plants are best pruned between November and March. Then there are no leaves on the tree and you can better judge the shape of the bush. Remove the vertical branches close to the ground, and the grey older branches.

8 Frost

If it is freezing outside, you cannot plant the blueberry plant. In that case, put the plant in your garage or shed in a frost-free place for as long as possible and keep the roots moist. Be careful not to put it in a heated room! If the roots are very dry, spray them a little wet with a plant sprayer. Not too wet, or they will rot. As soon as the frost is out of the ground (even though it may start freezing again) plant the blueberry bush immediately. Once in the ground, the plant can withstand frost.
